51st CIRP Conference on Manufacturing Systems

CIRP was founded in 1951 with the aim to address scientifically, through international co-operation, issues related to modern production science and technology. The International Academy for Production Engineering takes its abbreviated name from the French acronym of College International pour la Recherche en Productique (CIRP) and includes some 600 members from 50 countries.

The 51st CIRP Conference on Manufacturing Systems was organized in Stockholm, Sweden, from May 16 to 18, 2018. The theme of the conference was “Smart Manufacturing”.

Within that conference, a paper from researchers at the Institute of Industrial Automation and Software Engineering of the University of Stuttgart is mentioning CAPE-OPEN. The research work presented discusses co-simulation where the different subsystems which form a coupled problem are modeled and simulated in a distributed manner. The authors mention CAPE-OPEN as a domain-specific standard for co-simulation in the process industry. CO-LaN is thankful for that recognition.

However the authors also state that co-simulation cannot be achieved at run-time in process simulation. Whoever has been practicing interoperability through CAPE-OPEN knows that co-simulation happens at run-time. The APECS or VPDM projects are there to prove that as well.
